What is cause and effect in NLP
Putting your focus more on the “How” in place of “why” is the basic goal of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). It’s very practical with the aim of training you to be in charge of your own mind, the way you think, your views towards past and present events, and mostly your approach towards life.
In NLP, there is what we call “cause and effect,” it’s a language or communication pattern, between one element and the other, it occurs mostly within oneself. Cause and effect are that something definitely leads to another or makes something else happen.
Statistics has it that a huge number of people focus more on effects and a very few numbers on causes, this shouldn’t be the case, especially when you come to realize how this works with the help of an NLP Practitioner.
Take for instance, “I can’t concentrate on this project, because I’m having a hard time with life”, the “because” in that statement has led to the effect. Effect focuses more on blames, you blame the other for what you can’t achieve. The aim of NLP training is to make you fixed on the causes and how to achieve it without putting effects.
“I couldn’t finish up the job, because I wasn’t in the right frame of mind, I got pissed off by someone “, these are just excuses!!!. Why not do better, get focused, be determined to achieve something each day, concentrate more on the causes and don’t let effects take place.
How about “I got the job done despite the challenges I had at work today,” I’m a doctor today despite studying for 15 years, I didn’t give up even after I failed and was withheld for some years”. This is the absolute determination; you don’t have to blame someone else for what you failed to achieve.
When you look back in the future, it wouldn’t be nice saying things like “I would have been this, if it wasn’t for that,” come on!!! The era of such excuse is gone, be the driver of your life, decide which route to take and the amount of fuel you need for your tank.
We all get what we focus on and put our minds to, get fixed on solutions and not your limitations. The “Milton’s model” enlightens us more about cause and effect, with experiments on his patients in their unconscious mind, this language pattern tends to put you in a trance.
In Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), cause and effect are said to be in line with rules and beliefs. They are simply statements that show our belief in how things work; it’s either A causes B, or by doing A it makes B happen. It’s pertinent to note that, believing something doesn’t make it true.
A distortion people often make is assumptions, like someone, can put you in a certain state or make you feel a certain way, feeling this way is quite common and debilitating. The”If-Then” statement is also a common one in cause and effect, “if I work hard, then I can take care of my family,” remember one thing leads to another.
Most times, the statements open up to solutions, with the model questioning technique. It opens up the unconscious mind. A statement could go this way “I make her angry,” the model question comes in “How exactly do you make her angry?” This is a good way of getting rid of the effects.
